the waist down, and then autumn-winter asshole from the waist up\u2019 \u2013 this is <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/will-poulter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Will Poulter<\/a> describing his character in <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/01\/2025s-unexpectedly-gruesome-movie-gleefully-sprays-blood-guts-22826222\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new film Death of a Unicorn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 32-year-old Brit stars alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/paul-rudd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paul Rudd<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/jenna-ortega\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jenna Ortega<\/a>, T\u00e9a Leoni and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/richard-e-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Richard E. Grant<\/a> in the entertainingly gory and silly <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/horror-movies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">horror-comedy<\/a> from A24, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/18\/blockbuster-described-jurrasic-park-acid-totally-baffles-fans-new-teaser-22747089\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drawn comparisons with Jurassic Park<\/a>: namely, foolish humans discover an extinct (or in this case, mythological) creature, get drunk on the possibilities of its power and it all ends <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/03\/21\/anticipated-horror-movies-2025-28-years-later-netflixs-frankenstein-2-22766625\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">very badly \u2013 and bloodily<\/a> \u2013 indeed.<\/p>\n<p>Poulter plays one of the greedy humans, Shepard, son to cancer-stricken pharmaceutical magnate Odell Leopold (Grant) and his very expensive wife Belinda (Leoni), who welcome Odell\u2019s employee Elliot Kintner (Rudd) and his distant daughter Ridley (Ortega) to their retreat in the middle of a donated nature reserve.<\/p>\n<p>But on the way, Elliot accidentally hits a unicorn foal with his car, panics and hides it in the boot. When a hoof later smashes through the window and a horn pierces the roof, it\u2019s too late for him to hide the truth anymore, especially when the animal\u2019s incredible therapeutic properties are subsequently revealed.<\/p>\n<p>While Ridley worries over the morality of what\u2019s happening when a research team descends on the property to further probe at the unicorn, and Elliot is desperate to go along with things to keep his employer happy, the Leopolds are united in their goal: exploiting this find for maximum profit.<\/p>\n<p>Poulter appears to have the most fun of all as Shepard, a man who wears chino shorts paired with polo-necks, talks about his \u2018diversified portfolio of entrepreneurial activities\u2019 and takes to sniffing powdered unicorn horn \u2013 we all know someone like him.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_245128011-f290.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22826201\" alt=\"This image released by A24 shows Will Poulter in a scene from "Death of a Unicorn." Alex [Scharfman, writer-director] created so many brilliant characters, and I just sort of adored what an idiot Shep was,\u2019 Poulter says.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was really fun to play a character who is totally lacking in self-awareness, both when it comes to getting dressed in the morning, and also with virtually everything that comes out of his mouth. He’s a full-blown idiot.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>I ask if he perhaps had any specific inspirations for the part, but the Midsommar actor doesn\u2019t name any names, suggesting that \u2018no one’s actually that much of an idiot, I don’t think\u2019.<\/p>\n<section class=\"metro-comment-cta\">\n<div class=\"metro-comment-cta__inner\"><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text-wrap\"><title>Comment now<\/title><span class=\"metro-comment-cta__text\">What’s your favourite Will Poulter movie?<\/span><\/span><a class=\"metro-comment-cta__button\" href=\"#metro-comments-container\">Comment Now<\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>\u2018He’s an amalgam of lots of different people \u2013 and I suppose anytime I’ve met someone obnoxious, lacking in self-awareness and hyper-privileged, I’ve been keeping a mental notebook.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Obviously, a big draw of Death of a Unicorn, the debut feature from Scharfman, is its star-studded cast, whose characters bounce off each other in the Leopolds\u2019 lavish home, building to an excited frenzy as they become more and more intoxicated by the bountiful opportunities this baby unicorn represents.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_245793779-ba1c.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22826196\" alt=\"Jessica Hynes as Shaw, Tea Leoni as Belinda Leopold, Will Poulter as Shepard Leopold, Paul Rudd as Elliot Kintner, Jenna Ortega as Ridley Kintner and Anthony Carrigan as Griff all stand in a line, looking down at the unseen body of a unicorn, looking perplexed in Death of a Unicorn\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>The film’s star-studded cast embraced improvisation on set, especially Paul Rudd (3rd from R) (Picture: A24)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I loved the one shot that we did in the living room, where we’re all making plans to sort of harness the power of the unicorn,\u2019 Poulter recalls of his best memories on set. \u2018A lot of the scenes are a lot longer than what you see on screen because there was so much improvisation and fun stuff added.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Rudd was the main culprit here \u2013 \u2018just little silly things, like saying \u201cdanke\u201d to me kind of caught me by surprise in the hot tub scene\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He continues: \u2018There are multiple Paul moments throughout the film, [such as] when we’re getting that projector demonstration from Stephen Park\u2019s character [scientist Dr Song], and Paul is there sort of justifying his question before he asks it, about being the guy who made the discovery \u2013 it was just so, so funny. And every time he did it, he added a new bit; it was hard to get through the scene sometimes.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Poulter is also a fan of what is likely to be one of the movie\u2019s most oft-quoted lines, where a flustered Belinda comments on the \u2018girthsome\u2019 nature of the unicorn\u2019s horn during a dining scene.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She [Leoni] ate like an entire hedgerow of blackberries as well, doing it, and figs \u2013 and she was eating throughout that whole scene. Grant) looking to get richer from the discovery of unicorns’ healing powers (Picture: A24)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Maze Runner actor calls himself \u2018a bit of a scaredy cat\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2019\/07\/06\/even-will-poulter-disturbed-new-horror-movie-midsommar-10124417\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">when it comes to horror films<\/a> \u2013 \u2018I like acting in them, I just don’t like watching them much\u2019 \u2013 but he has seen the final cut of Death of a Unicorn in all its gruesome glory (there\u2019s a lot of impalements) and coped.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018As gory as it is, I think the laughs prove to be a good antidote to any of that scary stuff. It’s the spoonful of sugar along with the medicine,\u2019 he suggests. And when I describe an especially grisly bit of the film that had me laughing in shock, Poulter is encouraging.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Don’t judge yourself. Be a Leopold about it!\u2019 he says, recommending audiences embrace the approach of his entertaining, if grotesque, onscreen family \u2013 and that includes looking out for any inspired group costumes based on the Leopolds come Halloween. (A tip for would-be Sheps: \u2018If he’s not in shorts, he’s in a bathrobe: the shins are always out.\u2019)<\/p>\n<p>Poulter has already starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/05\/09\/will-poulter-warns-fans-off-superhero-marvel-training-schedule-18756569\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">done Marvel with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3<\/a> as Adam Warlock and had his early breakthroughs with 2008\u2019s Son of Rambow and, later, The Chronicles of Narnia.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/SEI_245128203-db84.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22826197\" alt=\"This image released by A24 shows Sunita Mani in a scene from "Death of a Unicorn." (A24 via AP)\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Poulter, not a natural horror fan, sees Death of a Unicorn’s comedy as the ‘spoonful of sugar’ to help with the film’s more violent and scary parts (Picture: Balazs Goldi\/A24)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Oh yes, and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/04\/09\/will-poulter-on-jennifer-aniston-kissing-scene-in-were-the-millers-16437749\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he kissed Jennifer Aniston in 2013 black comedy We\u2019re the Millers<\/a> (still the thing he\u2019s most recognised from, Poulter confirms).<\/p>\n<p>However, it feels like 2025 is another major moment for him thanks to the close releases of this film, his other A24 project \u2013 Iraq drama Warfare (alongside Kit Connor, Joseph Quinn and Riverdale\u2019s Charles Melton) \u2013 and his return to Charlie Brooker\u2019s groundbreaking TV anthology Black Mirror for Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>As he stands at this juncture at his career, what\u2019s the lesson he\u2019ll file away as having learned from Death of a Unicorn? What did he discover?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I think it was the fact that you can have fun, have a real laugh and enjoy yourself and let yourself go and be free, and the results still be funny,\u2019 he puts forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There’s this slightly old-hat idea that if it’s funny on set and you’re having fun doing it, it’s probably not going to be funny in reality. It’s just not true \u2013 and that was debunked by Paul Rudd himself and then further by the experience.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"396\" height=\"594\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/GettyImages-2207992174.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22848168\" alt=\""Warfare" UK Special Screening - VIP Arrivals\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>The Marvel star is also in A24 Iraq drama Warfare and the return of Black Mirror on Netflix this month (Picture: Getty)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I take a moment to praise Poulter for his openness when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/10\/25\/will-poulter-on-mental-health-and-moustaches-as-he-launches-movember-17636104\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">talking about mental health<\/a>; he\u2019s just recently opened up on his experience with OCD.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s thankful to friends and family offering him support and the chance to talk about it regularly, \u2018so I’ve naturally been less affected by the stigmatisation of the subject\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of how he\u2019d like to see things change in this regard in order to support young actors when entering an industry often perceived as toxic, as he did, he\u2019s keen that we continue to \u2018address it as a subject matter and make projects about it\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The only way to challenge stigmatisation is to destigmatise it and talk about it and try and help folks feel less alone. That keeps it interesting for me, and I hope it keeps it interesting for audiences. But yes, I think I try and just do the healthiest mix I possibly can manage,\u2019 he responds.<\/p>\n<p>To lighten the mood a little at the end, I ask a few more quick-fire questions before I\u2019m ejected.<\/p>\n<p>Although he does briefly ponder over an unnamed celebrity he saw in the lifts at the hotel that morning \u2013 a regular junket venue \u2013 Poulter has no comeback for the last time he was starstruck.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I make an idiot of myself so regularly that I try not to get starstruck too much,\u2019 he gamely offers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-player\">\n<div There is that possibility.
