teenagers\u2019 worlds and this was no different for <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/02\/15\/say-her-name-brianna-ghey-london-pays-tribute-to-trans-schoolgirl-18291195\/\">Brianna Ghey<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Over long <a data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/smartphones\/\">phone<\/a> calls, fun sleepovers and the desire to help each other navigate a time of life that can be equal parts joyful and testing, her relationships with friends Daisy, Lucie and Viv became pivotal. <\/p>\n<p>They were three of the most important people to Brianna, and in return, she was intrinsic to their lives. However, their bond was ripped apart on <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/02\/moment-brianna-gheys-warped-teenage-killers-arrested-20213877\/\">February 11, 2023<\/a> – a date forever engrained in their memory. <\/p>\n<p>On that day, <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/02\/brianna-gheys-killers-unmasked-jailed-life-20002701\/\">Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe<\/a>, both 15 at the time, lured 16-year-old Brianna to Culcheth Linear Park in Warrington and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/02\/sat-brianna-ghey-trial-this-like-2-20214548\/\">brutally ended her life.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Their heinous act snatched Brianna\u2019s future and stole any remnants of a carefree childhood away from the trio who knew her. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creating special bonds<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"430\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_245205069-3021.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22795354\" alt=\"Brianna Ghey in the centre of a collage. Such tardiness was something Daisy would end up being eternally grateful for.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Within minutes we were pulling ugly faces to take funny pictures. It\u2019s like we were long-time best friends,\u2019 Daisy tells <strong>Metro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Brianna was a comfort but also absolutely hilarious. In January 2022 they were both sat in the \u2018Oak suite\u2019 designed for students who didn\u2019t always benefit from traditional lessons. Brianna had dyslexia, ADHD and ASD [autism spectrum disorder] and missed some schooling due to spending time in a facility for her mental health and body dysmorphia.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I told her that I liked her hair and in response, she followed me around and didn\u2019t stop talking,\u2019 Lucie fondly remembers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I thought \u201cOkay, we\u2019re friends\u201d. I\u2019ve never got on with someone as quickly as I got on with Brianna. They often spoke until the second they fell asleep, not even taking a break when Lucie showered. \u2018I\u2019d put my phone on the wall so we could keep chatting,\u2019 Lucie remembers with a laugh, adding they would often be doing \u2018anything we weren\u2019t supposed to be doing!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During one memorable sleepover in Brianna\u2019s completely pink bedroom (\u2018She even painted the Playstation controller with pink nail varnish so when you touched it the colour melted onto your hands\u2019), they dyed Lucie\u2019s hair \u2018bright orange\u2019 much to her mum\u2019s dissatisfaction. <\/p>\n<p>Although the pair had a lot of fun together, Brianna\u2019s role in Lucie\u2019s life was significant in another way too. When Lucie came out as bisexual while at school, things became more difficult for her. \u2018We both loved being girly and were a little wild, but Brianna never judged me. I could tell her whatever and she\u2019d say \u201cAs long as you\u2019re happy\u201d,\u2019 she recalls. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"346\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_245199974-057d.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22794442\" alt=\"Brianna Ghey's life as told by her best friends picture: Supplied\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>They both opened up to each other (Picture: Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018I was crying constantly and had a rubbish time at school, but she made life easier. She understood because she’d gone through stuff herself.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Brianna was born Brett before transitioning at age 14 during the nationwide lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic. When schools reopened she reintroduced herself to the world as Brianna. <\/p>\n<p>The teen didn\u2019t just share herself with the people directly in her orbit, she also built a following on social media with makeup tutorials and dance videos, which Viv, now 17, first discovered in 2021. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_245199687-5b80-e1742982943149.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22794444\" alt=\"Brianna Ghey's life as told by her best friends picture: Supplied\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Viv commenting on Brianna’s TikTok led to a friendship (Picture: Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One day, she decided to comment on one of the TikToks, telling Brianna, \u2018You\u2019re gorgeous, I hope I\u2019m like you one day\u2019, which soon sparked a friendship between the two. Viv was also transitioning but wasn\u2019t as far into the journey as her new friend, who was full of advice, from clothing choices to \u2018passing\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I struggled to accept being trans but Brianna was very proud of it. She helped me like that part of me a lot more,\u2019 Viv tells <strong>Metro<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>Although their friendship lived online, Viv insists it was just as strong as anything that can be created offline. \u2018There was no time limit to our conversations and we\u2019d give each other pure, unbroken conversation,\u2019 she remembers. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I don’t always talk to every friend of mine for 30 minutes a day, but we\u2019d often speak for three to four hours. We would prioritise scheduling time for each other. That is friendship.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>After two years of chatting, Viv and Brianna agreed to finally meet on a shopping trip at Manchester Trafford Centre. Their excitement was steadily building for their girly day – but just a week before their highly-anticipated hangout Brianna was murdered.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Saying goodbye<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"921\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SEI_245199614-0c82-e1742991661430.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22794452\" alt=\"Brianna Ghey's life as told by her best friends picture: Supplied\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Initially, Daisy couldn’t believe the reports (Picture: Supplied)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Daisy was happy for Brianna when she made a new school friend in Scarlett Jenkinson in November 2022. Unbeknownst to Brianna and everyone else around them aside from Ratcliffe, Jenkinson was secretly researching ways to kill and making plans to murder Brianna.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few months after their first meeting, Brianna planned to take the bus alone to meet Jenkinson, Daisy felt proud of her, as it was something the teen had never done before.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I knew it was a big step for her,\u2019 she says.\u00a0They also met Ratcliffe, who had not previously met Brianna but knew Jenkinson from both previously attending the same school. Nobody could have known that Jenkinson and Ratcliffe had been plotting Brianna\u2019s death over a series of messages.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The pair stabbed Brianna 28 times before fleeing the scene. Dog walkers found the young girl’s body and called the emergency services but they were unable to save her. The offence was <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/12\/20\/brianna-ghey-two-16-year-olds-obsessed-death-guilty-murder-20002486\/\">motivated by sadistic tendencies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/03\/15\/the-reaction-to-brianna-ghey-tributes-shows-how-far-the-uk-is-from-accepting-trans-people-18445400\/\">hate against transgender people<\/a> was also a motive for Ratcliffe, the court ruled. She instantly went into protective mode and wanted to make sure her friend was shielded from such cruel taunts.<\/p>\n<p>Having been granted access to Brianna’s social media to help deal with trolls, Daisy logged on to delete any posts about what she still thought was a hoax. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I cared so much for her, I always wanted her to be okay so I thought I’m gonna have to help her deal with this,’ she explains. <\/p>\n<p>However, as more and more messages came through, Daisy slowly realised this wasn’t the work of vile trolls – her friend really had been murdered. \u2018That\u2019s when it hit me – this was real.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Daisy\u2019s mother, who was doing a grocery shop, rushed back home to be by her daughter’s side and didn\u2019t leave her for weeks. \u2018When my mum would go for a shower, she\u2019d have to get someone else to sit with me. Everybody else was talking about the stress of GCSEs while I was trying to grieve my best friend.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Viv was sitting in her boarding school\u2019s library revising for upcoming mock exams when she first became aware of the tragedy through a social media post: \u2018I just started breaking down, so my two friends walked me back to my room,’ she remembers. ‘The journey is normally 15 minutes but it took me 35 because I couldn’t walk. People probably thought I was drunk.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018For weeks I couldn\u2019t eat, drink, or move. I didn’t even go to the toilet. It’s so grim, but it’s just the way it was. It was one of the most prolific murders of a trans person and she was a close friend so I was paranoid. I thought I would be next. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018When the police visited me because I was too scared to go to the station, they spent a lot of time reassuring me that I was safe.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"594\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/nichesitetool.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/GettyImages-1473733795.jpg\" class=\"article-image wp-image-22794605\" alt=\"Funeral Takes Place Of Brianna Ghey\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Everyone wore pink to Brianna’s funeral (Picture: Christopher Furlong\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lucie was making a sandwich when a friend sent her an article about Brianna\u2019s murder. \u2018I had a tomato in my left hand and my phone in my right hand. I dropped both,’ she recalls. \u2018When I got into bed that night I was getting so many messages and calls that my phone started overheating.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2023\/03\/15\/sea-of-pink-in-warrington-as-mourners-celebrate-life-of-brianna-ghey-18448010\/\">Brianna\u2019s funeral in Warrington<\/a> was the first that Daisy had ever attended, and she didn\u2019t feel ready. She and others wore pink outfits as requested by the family, and the streets were packed with people. Not just those whopersonally knew Brianna, but also people who just wanted to pay their respects to the teen. They watched as a carriage with white horses carried her pink coffin. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I understood that funerals were for goodbyes but it felt too soon for me. I hadn\u2019t even processed that she’d gone,\u2019 Daisy explains. There was a lot of attention on the funeral, but she was able to get a moment alone with Brianna\u2019s coffin and gently placed a rose quartz bracelet on it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Brianna used to wear one similar until my dog bit it off,\u2019 she remembers, her voice momentarily sounding joyful. \u2018She kept all the beads for years after it happened. Esther Ghey, has said that she took part in the documentary to ensure that her "family's story was told truthfully, and people could get to know Brianna the way we did".\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Esther said the friends did an ‘outstanding job’ of talking about Brianna in the ITV documentary (Picture: ITV\/Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a new ITV documentary, Brianna: A Mother\u2019s Story, each of the trio has has spoken lovingly about their friend, alongside Brianna’s <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/02\/11\/brianna-gheys-mum-joins-mourners-one-year-teens-death-20260434\/\">mum, Esther<\/a>, who has campaigned tirelessly for more protection from online harm and mindfulness in schools since her daugher’s death. <\/p>\n<p>As part of the programme which looks back at Brianna’s life, and the murder investigation, the friends\u2019 were adamant that her fun and loving personality was given an equal amount of precedence to the devastating end. They want to ensure that her legacy isn\u2019t just sadness – something that Esther expressed gratitude for at a special first screening of the episode.<\/p>\n<p>As the three girls now stand on the edge of adulthood, they are united in a mission to make sure their friend is never forgotten. \u2018I talk about Brianna every day. I joke that my friends must be sick of hearing about her,\u2019 Viv says with a laugh. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I very much separate what happened to her from who she was. When she passed, I thought \u201cOkay, one of us needs to get better.\u201d I feel like I\u2019m living for both of us.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Lucie becomes visibly emotional when talking about some of her final interactions with Brianna. \u2018She was having a hard time and I reminded her that school is a very short part of your life. It\u2019s just so sad that she never got to experience that future.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She now looks for signs that Brianna is okay, and is adamant that she still contacts her. \u2018I recently saw the sunrise from my office which isn\u2019t usually visible from my window. It was bright pink – her favourite colour,\u2019 Lucie says, as tears fall down her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018She was just a girl living a life.
